This rubric is designed to assess student performance in an undergraduate Year 3 (Junior) U.S. History since 1945 course. The criteria evaluate students’ understanding of key historical events; themes; and analytical skills necessary for advanced historical study. Students will demonstrate their ability to analyze primary and secondary sources; construct evidence-based arguments; and contextualize post-1945 American history within broader social; political; and global frameworks. The rubric measures comprehension of major historical developments; including the Cold War; civil rights movements; Vietnam War; economic shifts; and contemporary challenges. Students must show proficiency in identifying cause-and-effect relationships; evaluating historical interpretations; and engaging with scholarly debates. Written assignments will be assessed for clarity; coherence; and proper use of historical evidence. Critical thinking is emphasized through analysis of how historical narratives are constructed and how they shape modern perspectives. Students should exhibit the ability to compare differing viewpoints and assess the reliability of sources. Participation in discussions and collaborative work will be evaluated based on contributions that reflect thoughtful engagement with course materials. Research skills are a key component; with students expected to locate; evaluate; and synthesize academic sources to support their arguments. Proper citation and adherence to academic integrity standards are required. The rubric also assesses students’ ability to connect historical events to present-day issues; demonstrating relevance and deeper understanding. By meeting these criteria; students will develop a stronger foundation in historical analysis; improve their writing and research abilities; and gain a nuanced perspective on the complexities of U.S. history since 1945. These skills are transferable to careers in education; law; public policy; and other fields requiring critical analysis and communication.
