Undergraduate Year 3 (Junior): Creative Writing Rubric Description

Undergraduate Year 3 (Junior) Creative Writing Rubric Description This rubric is designed to assess the skills and development of third-year undergraduate students in a Creative Writing program. It evaluates key areas such as originality; craft; technical proficiency; and critical engagement with literary forms. The rubric provides clear expectations for student work while encouraging creative risk-taking and refinement of voice. In the area of originality and creativity; students are expected to demonstrate a strong; distinctive voice and innovative approaches to storytelling or poetic expression. Their work should reflect a willingness to experiment while maintaining coherence and purpose. The rubric emphasizes the importance of pushing boundaries while staying grounded in intentional artistic choices. Craft and structure assess the student’s ability to construct well-developed narratives or poems with effective pacing; tension; and thematic depth. Attention to detail in language; imagery; and form is crucial. Students should show an understanding of genre conventions while also subverting or reimagining them when appropriate. Technical proficiency evaluates grammar; syntax; and stylistic precision. At this level; students must exhibit mastery of language mechanics while using stylistic choices deliberately to enhance their work. Errors should be minimal and not detract from the reader’s experience. Finally; critical engagement measures the student’s ability to reflect on their creative process; articulate influences; and demonstrate awareness of audience and purpose. This includes thoughtful revision and responsiveness to feedback. By using this rubric; students gain a structured framework to assess their growth; identify strengths; and target areas for improvement. It fosters a balance between creative freedom and disciplined craft; preparing them for advanced work in writing and revision.
