Preschool Numbers Rubric This rubric is designed to assess young learners’ understanding and application of early numeracy skills in a preschool setting. It provides a clear framework for evaluating children’s progress in recognizing numbers; counting; and basic mathematical concepts. The rubric supports educators in identifying strengths and areas for growth; ensuring targeted instruction that meets each child’s developmental needs. The rubric evaluates four key areas: number recognition; counting skills; one-to-one correspondence; and number formation. In number recognition; children are assessed on their ability to identify numerals 1 through 10; both in isolation and within their environment. Counting skills measure the child’s capacity to recite numbers in order and count objects accurately. One-to-one correspondence evaluates whether the child can match each counted object to a single number; a foundational skill for future math success. Number formation assesses the child’s ability to write numerals legibly; promoting fine motor development and early writing readiness. Each skill is rated on a developmental continuum; from ’emerging’ to ‘proficient;’ allowing teachers to track progress over time. The rubric encourages a growth mindset by celebrating incremental achievements while providing clear next steps for further learning. By using this tool; educators can tailor activities to reinforce numeracy through play-based and hands-on experiences; fostering a positive and engaging math environment. Parents can also use the rubric to understand their child’s progress and support learning at home. This structured yet flexible approach ensures that all children build a strong numerical foundation for future academic success.
