Preschool Library Skills Rubric This rubric is designed to assess and support the development of essential library skills in preschool-aged children. It provides a structured framework for educators to evaluate students’ progress in key areas such as book handling; listening comprehension; participation; and early literacy behaviors. By using this tool; teachers can identify strengths and areas for growth; ensuring that each child receives targeted support to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning. The rubric evaluates book handling skills; including how children hold; turn pages; and care for books. These foundational behaviors promote respect for library materials and independence in exploring texts. Listening comprehension is assessed through a child’s ability to engage with read-aloud sessions; respond to questions; and recall story details. This supports language development and critical thinking. Participation and engagement are measured by observing how children interact during library visits; including their willingness to share ideas; follow routines; and explore books independently. These behaviors encourage social skills and a positive attitude toward learning. Early literacy behaviors; such as recognizing letters; making predictions; or retelling stories; are also evaluated to gauge emerging reading readiness.
