Grade 5 Library Skills Rubric This rubric is designed to assess and guide the development of essential library skills for fifth-grade students. It evaluates key competencies such as locating and selecting appropriate materials; understanding library organization; using digital resources responsibly; and demonstrating proper book care. By providing clear expectations; the rubric helps students build independence in navigating the library and fosters a lifelong love of reading and learning. Students are assessed on their ability to use the library catalog effectively; locate books using call numbers; and identify genres or topics of interest. The rubric also measures their understanding of the Dewey Decimal System and their ability to apply this knowledge when finding materials. Additionally; it evaluates their proficiency in using digital tools; such as online databases or e-books; while practicing safe and ethical online behavior. Another critical component is book care and responsibility. Students are expected to demonstrate respect for library materials by handling books properly; returning them on time; and understanding the consequences of lost or damaged items. The rubric encourages accountability and reinforces the importance of shared resources within the school community. Finally; the rubric assesses students’ ability to engage with texts critically by summarizing content; making personal connections; and recommending books to peers. These skills support literacy development and promote collaborative learning. Teachers and librarians can use this rubric to provide targeted feedback; helping students refine their library skills and become confident; responsible users of information. The goal is to empower fifth graders with the tools they need for academic success and a lifelong appreciation of libraries.
