Grade 4 Library Skills Rubric This rubric is designed to assess and guide the development of essential library skills for fourth-grade students. It evaluates key areas such as locating materials; understanding library organization; demonstrating responsible book care; and using digital resources appropriately. By providing clear expectations; the rubric helps students build independence in navigating the library and fosters a lifelong love of reading and research. In the area of locating materials; students are assessed on their ability to use the library catalog; identify call numbers; and find books on shelves independently. This skill supports their academic growth by teaching them to access information efficiently. Understanding library organization includes recognizing the difference between fiction and nonfiction; as well as the purpose of the Dewey Decimal System. These concepts strengthen students’ ability to categorize and retrieve information; which is critical for research projects. Responsible book care is another focus; encouraging students to handle materials with respect and return them on time. This promotes accountability and ensures resources remain available for others. Digital resource use evaluates students’ ability to navigate age-appropriate online tools; such as educational databases; while practicing safe and ethical online behavior. These skills prepare them for future academic and personal technology use. The rubric also assesses students’ engagement with reading by tracking their ability to select books that match their interests and reading level. By setting measurable goals; the rubric encourages students to take ownership of their learning while developing habits that support literacy and critical thinking. Overall; this tool provides teachers and librarians with a framework to support student growth in library skills; fostering confidence and competence in using library resources effectively.
