This rubric is designed to assess Grade 2 students’ short stories based on key writing and storytelling skills appropriate for their developmental level. The rubric evaluates four main criteria: creativity and ideas; organization and structure; language and word choice; and conventions. Each category is scored on a scale from emerging to proficient; providing clear expectations for student performance. In the creativity and ideas section; students are assessed on their ability to develop an engaging story with a clear beginning; middle; and end. Strong stories will include imaginative details and show originality. The organization and structure category focuses on logical sequencing; coherent plot progression; and appropriate use of transitions. Students should demonstrate an understanding of basic story structure. Language and word choice evaluates the student’s ability to use descriptive and age-appropriate vocabulary. Effective stories will include varied sentence structures and vivid language to enhance the narrative. The conventions category assesses spelling; punctuation; capitalization; and grammar; ensuring students apply foundational writing rules correctly. Using this rubric helps teachers provide consistent and constructive feedback; guiding students toward improvement in narrative writing. It also allows students to self-assess their work; fostering independence and goal-setting. By focusing on these key areas; the rubric supports literacy development; encourages creative expression; and reinforces essential writing skills. The clear criteria make it a valuable tool for both instruction and assessment in the Grade 2 classroom.
