The Grade 12 World History (Canadian History) rubric is designed to assess students’ understanding of key historical events; themes; and concepts within a Canadian and global context. It evaluates students’ ability to analyze historical sources; develop well-supported arguments; and demonstrate critical thinking about the causes and consequences of significant historical developments. The rubric emphasizes the importance of historical inquiry; encouraging students to engage with primary and secondary sources to form evidence-based conclusions. Students are assessed on their knowledge of historical content; including Canada’s political; social; and economic evolution; as well as its interactions with global events. The rubric measures their ability to contextualize historical narratives; recognizing diverse perspectives and the impact of colonialism; immigration; and cultural exchange. By focusing on historical literacy; the rubric helps students develop skills in research; analysis; and communication; which are essential for academic success and informed citizenship. The rubric also evaluates students’ ability to construct coherent written responses; ensuring clarity; logical organization; and proper use of historical terminology. It encourages students to reflect on the relevance of history to contemporary issues; fostering a deeper appreciation for how past events shape present-day society. Through this assessment tool; students gain a stronger foundation in historical thinking; preparing them for post-secondary education and active participation in democratic discourse. The rubric supports equitable evaluation by providing clear criteria for success; allowing students to understand expectations and track their progress in mastering historical concepts and skills.
