The Grade 12 IB Film HL/SL rubric is designed to assess students’ understanding and application of film theory; production; and analysis within the International Baccalaureate framework. This rubric evaluates students across multiple criteria; including their ability to critically analyze films; develop creative projects; and engage with global cinematic traditions. Through this assessment; students demonstrate their proficiency in both the technical and theoretical aspects of filmmaking; fostering a deeper appreciation for the art form. The rubric emphasizes the development of analytical skills; requiring students to examine films through cultural; historical; and stylistic lenses. By engaging with diverse cinematic works; students learn to articulate their interpretations with clarity and depth; enhancing their ability to think critically about visual storytelling. Additionally; the creative production component encourages students to apply their knowledge practically; guiding them through the stages of pre-production; filming; and post-production. This hands-on experience cultivates problem-solving skills and collaborative teamwork; essential for future academic and professional pursuits. For HL students; the rubric includes more advanced expectations; such as in-depth research and extended film projects; preparing them for higher education in film studies or related fields. SL students also benefit from a rigorous but accessible framework that builds foundational skills in film analysis and production. Both levels promote intercultural understanding by exploring films from different regions and traditions; broadening students’ perspectives.
