Grade 11 AP English Language Rubric Description This rubric is designed to assess student performance in Grade 11 AP English Language; focusing on critical reading; analytical writing; and rhetorical skills. The criteria align with the College Board’s AP English Language and Composition course objectives; ensuring students develop college-level proficiency in argumentation; synthesis; and rhetorical analysis. The rubric evaluates essays based on three key areas: thesis development; evidence and commentary; and sophistication of thought. A strong thesis must be clear; defensible; and responsive to the prompt. Students must demonstrate the ability to construct a coherent argument supported by relevant evidence from provided texts or their own knowledge. Commentary should explain how the evidence supports their claims; showing depth of analysis rather than summary. In rhetorical analysis; students examine how authors use language to persuade; emphasizing devices such as diction; syntax; and figurative language. For synthesis essays; they must integrate multiple sources to build a cohesive argument; demonstrating source credibility and proper attribution. Argument essays require students to defend; challenge; or qualify a position using logical reasoning and persuasive techniques. Grammar; style; and organization are also assessed to ensure clarity and precision in writing. Mastery of these skills prepares students for the AP exam and fosters essential academic abilities; including critical thinking; effective communication; and evidence-based reasoning. By meeting these standards; students gain confidence in analyzing complex texts and crafting well-supported arguments; skills valuable in higher education and professional settings. This rubric provides clear expectations; allowing students to self-assess and refine their writing through targeted feedback and revision.
