Grades 1 to 9 Physical Education Rubric Description This rubric is designed to assess student performance in lower grades physical education; focusing on common subjects such as locomotor skills; object control; teamwork; and participation. The criteria are aligned with developmental milestones and educational goals to ensure students build a strong foundation in physical literacy. The rubric evaluates locomotor skills; including running; jumping; and skipping; to assess coordination and spatial awareness. Mastery of these skills supports cognitive and motor development; helping students gain confidence in movement. Object control; such as throwing; catching; and kicking; is measured to improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. These abilities are essential for participation in sports and recreational activities. Teamwork and cooperation are key components; emphasizing communication; sharing; and fair play. These social skills foster positive peer interactions and teach students the value of collaboration. Participation and effort are also assessed to encourage engagement and perseverance; promoting a lifelong appreciation for physical activity. Safety and following directions are included to ensure students understand the importance of rules and responsible behavior in group settings. This reinforces discipline and respect for others; which are transferable to classroom and community environments. The rubric provides clear performance levels; allowing teachers to give constructive feedback. It supports differentiated instruction by identifying areas for growth while celebrating student progress. By using this tool; educators can create an inclusive and motivating environment where all students develop the physical; social; and emotional skills needed for healthy; active lifestyles.
