Grade 1: Library skills Rubric Description

The Grade 1 Library Skills Rubric is designed to assess foundational literacy and library skills essential for young learners. It evaluates students’ ability to navigate the library environment; understand basic book handling; and develop early research habits. The rubric measures key areas such as book care; shelf marker use; and appropriate library behavior; fostering responsibility and respect for shared resources. Students are assessed on their ability to locate and select age-appropriate books with minimal assistance; demonstrating growing independence in reading choices. The rubric also evaluates their understanding of library routines; including checking out and returning books on time; which builds accountability and organizational skills. Listening and participation during read-aloud sessions are included to assess engagement and comprehension. The rubric encourages early research skills by evaluating students’ ability to ask questions about topics of interest and identify simple resources with guidance. This supports curiosity and lays the groundwork for future information literacy. Social skills; such as working quietly and sharing resources; are also assessed to promote a positive learning environment. By using this rubric; educators can track progress and provide targeted support to help students develop confidence in using the library. Parents gain insight into their child’s growth in literacy and responsibility. The structured feedback helps students understand expectations and celebrate achievements; reinforcing a love for reading and lifelong learning. Overall; the rubric supports the development of essential skills that contribute to academic success and personal growth.
