Undergraduate Year 3 (Junior): Art History & Modern Art Rubric Description

This rubric is designed for third-year undergraduate students studying Art History and Modern Art to assess their understanding of key concepts; analytical skills; and ability to engage critically with artistic movements and works. The evaluation criteria emphasize the development of scholarly research; visual analysis; and contextual interpretation; ensuring students build a strong foundation for advanced study or professional work in the arts. Students will be assessed on their ability to identify and analyze major modern art movements; including Impressionism; Cubism; Surrealism; and Abstract Expressionism; among others. They must demonstrate knowledge of influential artists; techniques; and historical contexts; showing how these elements shaped modern art’s evolution. Written assignments and presentations will evaluate their capacity to construct coherent arguments supported by scholarly sources and visual evidence. Critical thinking is a core component; requiring students to compare and contrast artworks; interpret symbolism; and assess the socio-political influences on artistic production. Class participation and discussion contributions will measure their engagement with course material and ability to articulate informed perspectives. Research projects will test their ability to locate; evaluate; and synthesize academic sources while adhering to proper citation standards. The rubric also evaluates technical skills; such as formal analysis; where students must describe compositional elements like line; color; and form while connecting them to broader artistic intentions. By meeting these standards; students will refine their ability to think critically about visual culture; develop strong writing and presentation skills; and gain a deeper appreciation for modern art’s role in shaping contemporary discourse. This prepares them for advanced coursework; internships; or careers in museums; galleries; education; or cultural institutions.
