The Grade 12 IB Spanish; French; or Mandarin B HL/SL rubric is designed to assess students’ language proficiency and intercultural understanding through clear; structured criteria. It evaluates students across four key areas: receptive skills (listening and reading); productive skills (speaking and writing); interactive skills (oral communication); and intercultural competence. Each criterion is carefully aligned with the IB’s emphasis on developing well-rounded; globally aware learners. For receptive skills; students demonstrate comprehension of authentic texts and audio materials; showing their ability to engage with diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. Productive skills focus on written and spoken fluency; accuracy; and coherence; encouraging students to express ideas effectively in the target language. Interactive skills assess conversational ability; including spontaneity and clarity in dialogue. Intercultural competence evaluates students’ awareness of cultural perspectives and their ability to reflect on similarities and differences between their own culture and those of the target language. This rubric supports students in achieving linguistic confidence while fostering critical thinking and empathy. By engaging with real-world materials and meaningful communication tasks; learners develop practical language skills applicable in academic; professional; and social settings.
