Grade 10: World history (Middle Ages) Rubric Description

This rubric is designed to assess student performance in a Grade 10 World History course focusing on the Middle Ages. It evaluates students’ understanding of key historical concepts; their ability to analyze primary and secondary sources; and their skill in constructing well-supported arguments. The rubric emphasizes critical thinking; historical accuracy; and clear communication; ensuring students develop a deeper appreciation for the political; social; and cultural developments of the medieval period. Students will be assessed on their knowledge of major events; figures; and themes; such as feudalism; the Crusades; the rise of Islam; and the impact of the Black Death. The rubric measures their ability to contextualize these topics within broader historical narratives. By engaging with these criteria; students will strengthen their ability to identify cause-and-effect relationships and recognize the lasting influence of the Middle Ages on the modern world. Written and oral communication skills are also evaluated; with a focus on clarity; organization; and the use of evidence to support claims. Students will practice synthesizing information from multiple sources; distinguishing between fact and interpretation; and presenting their findings in a coherent manner. These skills are essential for academic success and lifelong learning. The rubric encourages students to reflect on historical perspectives; including diverse viewpoints and the experiences of marginalized groups. This fosters empathy and a more nuanced understanding of the past. By meeting the rubric’s standards; students will demonstrate readiness for advanced historical study and develop the analytical tools needed to engage critically with contemporary global issues. The goal is to cultivate informed; thoughtful citizens who appreciate the complexity of history.
