Grade 8 Elections • Voting Rubric This rubric is designed to assess students’ understanding and participation in a Grade 8 mock election activity. The goal is to reinforce civic responsibility; critical thinking; and democratic principles while engaging students in a hands-on learning experience. Students will be evaluated on their ability to research candidates or issues; articulate informed opinions; and participate responsibly in the voting process. Research and Preparation (30 points): Students must demonstrate thorough research on the candidates or ballot issues. This includes gathering reliable sources; identifying key positions; and understanding the implications of different choices. Strong work will show depth of analysis and clarity in summarizing information. Informed Decision-Making (30 points): Students should justify their voting choices with clear reasoning based on their research. Evaluations will consider whether arguments are logical; evidence-based; and free from bias. Higher scores reflect well-supported decisions that consider multiple perspectives. Participation and Engagement (20 points): Active involvement in discussions; debates; and the voting process itself is essential. Students must show respect for differing opinions; ask thoughtful questions; and contribute meaningfully to class activities. Reflection (20 points): After voting; students will write or discuss their insights on the election process. Strong reflections will analyze what they learned; how their views may have evolved; and the importance of voting in a democracy. This rubric encourages students to develop research skills; critical thinking; and civic awareness while fostering respectful dialogue. By engaging in this activity; students gain practical experience in democratic participation; preparing them for future civic responsibilities.
