Grade 2 General Science Rubric Description This rubric is designed to assess student performance in Grade 2 General Science; providing clear expectations for learning outcomes while supporting teachers in evaluating progress. The rubric covers key scientific skills; including observation; inquiry; basic experimentation; and understanding of life; physical; and earth sciences. By using this tool; educators can provide structured feedback that helps students recognize their strengths and areas for growth. The rubric evaluates students on four key criteria: knowledge of scientific concepts; ability to conduct simple investigations; use of scientific tools and methods; and communication of findings. Each criterion is broken into performance levels (e.g.; emerging; developing; proficient; and advanced) to give a detailed picture of student achievement. This allows teachers to identify whether a student is beginning to grasp foundational ideas; applying them with guidance; or demonstrating independent understanding. For students; the rubric serves as a guide to understanding expectations and tracking their own progress. It encourages self-reflection by making learning goals transparent. Parents can also use the rubric to support their child’s science education at home; reinforcing classroom learning. By aligning with standard Grade 2 science curricula; this rubric ensures consistency in assessment while promoting inquiry-based learning. It helps teachers tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs; fostering a deeper engagement with science. Ultimately; the rubric supports the development of critical thinking; curiosity; and a strong foundation in scientific literacy—skills essential for future academic success.
